Lo and behold! The school finally has a school tarana!

Established many decades ago, it was high time that the Govt. Girls Hr. Secondary School Bandipora had a tarana of its own. For quite some time I had the rough draft of the song in my head but the Shirin Saaz-ti-awaaz initiative by Delhi Public School Srinagar was an impetus enough to give it a final shape. To make an exceptional entry in the show we decided to present a new composition. I wrote and composed the song, the day we received the file of the show from the CEOs office.

The theme of the song comprises of two ideas.

Since we are a girls’ school, it was pertinent to speak about the importance of the education of girls. At the same time, it was imperative to convey the message that the education of girls doesn’t only change their lives but also changes the outlook of the society. It changes the way we live.

The second part of the theme is however, dominant. I have a strong belief that in order to educate our girls it is important to set them free. When I say so, I mean they should have the freedom to think and the liberty of expressing their thoughts in their own way. This, in my opinion is real education and real empowerment. A mind that is not caged receives knowledge well and also knows its utility. The metaphors; Aabi sharaun seath nazov and nav-baharan munz gindov, will stand witness to this spirit, till eternity.

I am no poetess as such. I try to play with words and have a little collection of English poems. This song is my first Kashmiri composition thus, my apologies, if I have served something ordinary on your platter. The second one will be deliciously better, InshaAllah.
