        Honesty still is the best policy for some!

It was a quiet day at school today as the secondary section was on a trip to Sonamarg. I don’t know how much fun they had around the Glaciers but being at peace at School without that maddening noise certainly felt heaven. We, the Higher Secondary staff spent major part of the day basking in the Sun and intermittently dozing under the shadow of the magnificent Chinar tree that stands splendid and grand in the middle of the ground. A fine day, well spent and with this as the icing on the cake and certainly a life-long inspiration.

 An old man, charmingly donning his peppered look alongwith a white skull-cap came to see the Principal of our school today. Principal Sir introduced him as Mr. Abdul Hameed Teli, a retired Chief Educational Officer from Sopore. Mr. Teli and Our boss, Mr. Mohd. Yousuf Malla have worked as  colleagues for quite some time and during one such period in 1989, when they were contemporaries at  The Govt. Higher Secondary School, Sopore, Mr. Teli borrowed a note-book from Malla Sahab. Malla Sahab, as he put it, had back then maintained a note-book of important details in accordance with the prescribed syllabus. He has done his PG in Botany and has thus served as a Lecturer in the subject for quite a long period of time. Nonetheless, today, the 18th Day of May 2013, Teli Sahab,an old retired officer, travelled from Sopore to Bandipore, a drive of almost an hour, just to return this small note-book, to its owner, the Principal of our school. Yes! You read it right. The man took the note-book on loan in 1989 and today after 24 long years he came to return it.  With perpetual poise he said, “ I didnot want to be encumbered by this burden at the time of my death.” The note-book didnot look worth much money, but Malla Sahab,I am sure, has won a treasure today.

As much as Teli Sahab’s gesture is an inspiration, a motivation for being virtuous whatsoever, it also is a reminder that one should never forsake hope. The hope that we still have people like Teli Sahab who make the world a place worth living and following the foot steps we can even make it better.It is easy to be a cynic but much better to be hopeful. We might have lost a lot but we have not lost it all. Let's not stop,it is always pleasurable to Hope!

Jaz'rah

My niece,  Jaz'rah Jahangir Makhdoomi was born on December 5, 2014 at 7:33 in the evening. She was brought out of the operation theatre around 8:00 pm and her cradle looked tiny in front of the oxygen cylinder supporting her respiration. Jaz'rah, at the time of her birth was sick. However , when I first looked at her, I saw a twinkle in her eyes that promised life. Her eyes were gleaming and the sparkle was that of a fighter, the sparkle that spoke of survival. I knew she'll fight and she'll live. Jaz'rah, less of a princess and more of a warrior , gave us the hope that she'll make it to our arms. Half an hour after her birth, she was shifted from Modern Hospital to G.B.Pant Children's Hospital and she remained on the life-support for one week in the NICU and for the other week she recupirated in Ward nos 8 and 9. She fought for her life for 15 days; too long a period for a newborn. I would visit her everyday and the twinkle in her eyes never disappointed ...

August 25, 2019 Dull sunny afternoon Kashmir I was barely making it through the 20th day of curfew when a riotous noise in my neighborhood dragged me to the rear window of my room this morning. I saw a cheerful group of 10-12 children, shouting and screaming a plot to each other and I settled myself by the sill and cupped my face in my hands. They were carrying sticks and handkerchiefs in their tiny hands and I could easily comprehend the nature of the upcoming theatrics. After all, what else could the childhood of conflict ridden children look like, even if it unfolds itself in the poetic countryside set up!
